My Calendar - Cynthia's design

I was invited to make calendars every month with Cynthia, Scout and Robyn. I went with a monochrome yellow theme with the daffodils this time. Every month we’ll be taking photos and Cynthia will add the design and calendars. It’s a beautiful thing. And handy – a calendar for wallpaper on your computer. What day was that again? Oh yah! Let me check. Why, it’s a Tuesday. Perfect.

You have a selection to choose from! See your other choices below.

Finally. One finished project.

I was as surprised as Dion Phaneuf* this morning to find that I had actually nearly finished my rug. Finally! The Year of the Ox wasn’t kidding. Just one long year of putting one foot in front of the other and feeling like the field would never be tilled. I didn’t think I’d ever get anything completed. But today, I finished the rug! I spent just about the whole day yesterday ripping and rolling fabric – the most time consuming part of the project. Crocheting it was easy.

I thought I would have to block the whole heavy carpet by soaking it in the tub and then drying it off in between towels and putting something heavy on it so it would flatten out. But instead, I just ironed it. I turned the iron on to the highest setting, hit the steam button a lot and it flattened out into a perfectly flat circle. Yay! You can’t do that for every crochet project, unfortunately. I only ironed this instead of blocking it because the fabric was made of cotton (I’m sure there was some polyester in there, too) and is safe to iron out. I would not do that with wool (NO!) or mohair (NO!), but piles of torn fabric you’ve had in your closet for at least 4 years? It’s totally cool.

Would you like to see it in our front entrance? You can see it below…

*Hockey Talk – Dion Phaneuf was traded this morning to the Toronto Maple Leafs from Calgary. I didn’t see that coming.

The Village on a rainy day

This afternoon I had a meeting with an employer who’s location is very near the ScienceWorld Skytrain Station. This very Skytrain station happens to be right across the water from The Village for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. There’s a walkway that leads from ScienceWorld and takes you all the way along the water to Yaletown. I took a right before GM Place (it won’t be called that much longer. It’s official name during The Games will be Canada Hockey Place) and walked up to Chinatown. But, back on the walkway, there are tents set up and and it looks as though ScienceWorld is being rented out for a Russian display area of sorts. The whole area along the walkway is filling up with huge tents for displays for Ontario and Saskatchewan. And right along the water are all sorts of Inukshuks. I’ll go back with better footwear – my clogs were not really good for climbing around the rocky patches with a camera.

Mailbox

January 27, 2010

I’ve been seeing these mailboxes all around town. I love how they’re decorated with a variety of postal codes from across Canada. And they look just as cool in sepia. Well. I got to see the new Mel (Sugar Tits) Gibson movie with Cathy Mechanic. And I can gladly recommend this movie to my sister [...]

Australia Day was a big hit

January 26, 2010

Even though I had created some crunchier than the traditional Anzac biscuits, I have to tell you, they were a big hit. That recipe made about 4 dozen cookies and they were all gone by 2:30. We started eating them for breakfast – well, they did have oats in them. Charmaine and Bec checked in [...]

Anzac Biscuits

January 25, 2010

It was brought to my attention today that tomorrow is Australia Day. Actually, I’ll bet the Australians in Australia are celebrating right now – due to the time change. But anyway, tomorrow is the big day here. Bec mentioned something about Anzac biscuits. She loves them and they always have them on Australia Day. I [...]

Some tea in a festive cup

January 24, 2010

After an exciting day yesterday hanging out with a friend who’s back (in more ways than one) for most of the day, I spent today cleaning and cleaning and getting my home office in a decent state because: 1) It looks like I’ll be working from home part-time during the Olympix! Yay! The downtown office [...]

The Lantern Forest

January 22, 2010

I discovered on my lunch break that today was the lighting ceremony for the LunarFest 2010. Granville Street had been transformed into a glorious art display – including a cool art piece called the Double Happiness Chickens. I took some photos of that tonight, but will go back with my wide angle lens to get [...]

Don’t blame me

January 21, 2010

Blame the store window at Granville Island – this sign was actually spotted in a window of the Kids Market. True story. Just in case you missed it, I ventured over to Granville Island on the Skinny Quiet Train which I blogged about here.
