Every where you turn, there’s something going on downtown. Why just today after work, I saw this a mere block away from my office out front of The Bay.
There were piles of people taking this fuzzy blue animal’s photo. And who was the person in the cool red tracksuit? The design on the back is very cool. Luckily, they did turn around this is who they are…

I had a day of sewing that started off with a little beanbag for Mike’s spacephone. We’ve been listening to his iphone as we drift off to sleep at night and thought it would be nice to have a little dock for it. Mike also uses it for his alarm clock. All I did was cut two six-inch squares, sew around 3 1/2 edges, filled it about 2/3 full with dried lentils and sewed it shut. Instead of laying it flat, I made a fold in the bottom so it kind of sits like a triangle.
Since I had the sewing machine out and after seeing Cynthia’s and the Ookie’s quilts, I thought I’d try a mini-quilt. But opted, instead, to make a quilted table runner. And instead of making a bunch of fancy blocks, I make 1 log cabin blog and two additional “blocks” that consisted of 3 strips sewn together. I didn’t think I was ready for lots of math and all that measuring. So I sewed my three blocks together, made a quilt sandwich and did a big whack of freestyle stitching. Turned out that’s my favourite part. I just doodled on the quilt with the sewing machine and I really like how it turned out. I think I should do more of that. Here’s the photo:

I think I just got lucky yesterday by getting this close to entrance of the Athlete’s Olympic Village. It’s located just under the Cambie Street Bridge and is a short walk away from the Canada Line. From a distance, it looks like it’s blocked off by fences covered with the big Olympic banners. But it wasn’t. And I only discovered that when I saw a person on bike ride through the area. So I followed him and got right to the entrance as a Korean team was arriving. Whoa. They sure do have a lot of speed skaters in Korea!
I was stopped twice by p0lice 0fficers. Both were very friendly and didn’t mind me taking photos of the area. I was quite nervous when I thought the second 0fficer asked me, “What are you doing?” I just held up my camera and said, “I’m just some pictures.” but the c0p smiled and said, “No. HOW are you doing? Are you enjoying the Olympic vibe?” I can definitely get used to this – the smiling and good will. And every single Olympic employee (they wear uniforms) that saw me, smiled and said “hello”. This is kind of unusual. Well, for me, anyway. I’m pretty used to putting my head down and just trying to get to where I need to go without the niceties. With the exception of making a point of being nice to the bus drivers. I always say good morning to them.
This experience reminded me of the slogan we had around the Olympics in Calgary – “Smile! You’re a tourist attraction!” – which I thought was kind of hokey at the time. But having experienced it yesterday, I think I just may get one of those Ask Me! I’m Happy to Help! pins they’re handing out at Tourism BC if they have any left.

Today I had a big dilemma. Should I go to the Canadian Pavilion on Hastings Street to see how Canada mines it’s diamonds OR do I go to the Olympic Athlete’s Village to see if I could get a shot of the Boxing Kangaroo flag? Last night on the news we heard that Team Australia had put up a huge Boxing Kangaroo flag instead of the country’s official flag and the International Olympic Committee had asked them to take it down. I HAD to get down there to see if they had complied. Had they?
No way! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Hellz no! The flag was still proudly displayed – two stories tall of punchy kangaroo at 1:30 this afternoon. Here’s a zoomy shot below:
