…and some squares and a nut loaf.
Grandma’s cookbook is coming together and I worked on some shots tonight of this mixed platter. Up front and starting on the left hand side, my dry Barney Googles (AKA: Scottish Haystacks, Awesome Fridge Cookies or Bug cookies) I love that this is popular treat amongst my buddies! Next to them, my new fave, Chinese Chews and next to them, a Pineapple Square (recipe here). In the back on the lefthand side are slices of Date and Nut Loaf. I’ll give you that recipe later, because today is Chinese Chew day. I’d really like to know how this name came about. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of dates. I was kind of neutral about them until now. I rarely ate them or used them in my cooking. I just kind of forgot about them. The date flavour is a quite mild in these cookies. But the combination of dates, nuts and a dusting of icing sugar really make them taste lovely. Definitely a great treat with tea and milk. YES!
Chinese Chews
2/3 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 tsp vanilla
Icing sugar
Method:
Stir flour, baking powder and salt together. Add sugar, dates and nuts. Then stir in eggs and vanilla. Spread about 1/2″ thick on a well greased 9” square pan.
Bake at 325° for 25-30 minutes. Cut in small squares (while warm) and roll into balls. Dredge with icing sugar.
So, basically, you make date and nut cake, break it up into pieces and roll each piece in icing sugar. Genius!
I’m going to a picnic this weekend and I’ll be bringing some of these for the picnic goers. I think they’ll like them.

COOL! Thanks! I have everything I need to make those tomorrow, provided the temp goes down a bit first. It’s stifling hot at my house.
Mmm can’t wait to try them!! Yum!!
I love dates. I am definitely going to make those. Walnuts are evidently good for the brain, and my brain has gone on holliday and left me behind these days. I think these will help.
They were fan-tastic!! In fact I think I might- no, *am* going to- make some myself- mmmmmmnom!! Thanks for sharing the recipe!! And thanks for the yummy treats and fun picnic!!
It all looks so delicious, Carol! Can’t wait to see the other recipes, especially the pie you showed on flickr, and the choice for your book cover – I know it will be awesome!
