It took about 10 apples to make 3 jars of applesauce. I’m pretty much out of apples at this point. Man, 20lbs of apples don’t go too far at all. Next time, I’ll pick 40 lbs of apples.
Applesauce is easy to make no matter how you do it. For example – roasted applesauce is yummy and easy and one of my favourite ways to make applesauce. But this time I busted out the crockpot, peeled, cored and sliced 10 apples, added about 1/2 a cup of pear juice I had in the fridge (but you could use apple juice or just water), sprinkled some Rogers Organic Sugar on the apples and added 4 cinnamon sticks. I put the crockpot on low and let it do it’s magic over 10 hours. Doesn’t get any easier than that. And the secret ingredient that makes the applesauce pink? A few strawberries I added in with the sliced apples.
Once I pulled out the cinnamon sticks, I pureed everything right in the crockpot with my little hand blender. I tested for sweetness – I don’t like mine too sweet, but if you want, you can add more sugar or add some honey or some maple syrup. Blend it up to your favourite consistency – I like mine chunky…and then it’s ready for canning or refrigeration.
Tonight I turned my applesauce into Applesauce Cake using this recipe. It was very moist (Ew. That word. Blech) but very, very tasty. It’s almost like pudding. Either way, it was a yummy treat on this windy and rainy night with a cup of tea.
