Fondue-it. It’s delicious.

Tonight we had a couple of buddies over for a New Year’s Eve dinner. The pork roast went over pretty well, either that or everyone was VERY hungry. But I saved the best for last – chocolate fondue for dessert. Clearly Malcolm doesn’t read my tweets or my facebook status because I’m pretty sure I mentioned FONDUE a few times these last few days. I knew this when he showed up with donuts (and coffee!). What? Okay then. We’ll add them to the dessert menu.

To make this fondue I hauled out this beautiful metal fondue pot that belonged to my Grandma & Grandpa in Calgary. Sadly, they don’t allow fondues in the old folks home where they now reside. :-(

But I put this pot to good use, and tested out the temperature for the chocolate by using a little tea light. That’s all you need for chocolate to melt. I put a couple of Lindt chocolate balls in the pot with the candle quite close to the bottom and found the heat way too hot – it actually burned the chocolate. I ended up putting the candle right on the table and the temperature was much better – the chocolate was a bit cool, but the consistency was perfect.

We received many gifts of chocolate this year from very generous friends and family members. And we put this to good use for our dessert tonight. There was a mixture of milk, dark and some hazelnut chocolate in there. Good call. And we dipped fresh pineapple chunks, fresh strawberries and some cut up angel food cake into the fondue. Oh. Yum. The consensus of the room would indicate fresh pineapple dipped in chocolate was the best taste sensation of all. Even the donuts we dunked in, because Michelle in Nova Scotia suggested it.

We named Michelle’s invention Fon-donut. We selected a cruller and a skinny old fashioned donut to demonstrate.

Here’s the old fashioned being dipped into the fondue pot – please note: we were way past full at this point. Oof. It hurts just looking at it.

And then, we ate some. But not much. Too. Much. Pineapple and chocolate already. But Malcolm took one for the team and nearly ate the whole cruller:

After that culinary accomplishment (thanks, Michelle!) we watched the Canucks barely beat The Blues (phew! Close one!) and then watched Team Canada beat Team USA in Saskatoon.

Phew! Close one again!

I think this may be my last post of 2009, so with that, I wish you all a Happy New Year!

See you in 2010.

Happy New Year! The fondue looks amazingly good (and like an amazingly fun time) — that is a stroke of culinary genius to add the donuts to the dunking retinue!

Oh. My. I am sorry, but I am putting chocolate dipped doughnuts right up there with deep fried Mars bars with a side of fries on the very back top shelf. I am so afraid that if I tried either I would just love them.
