Today at lunch I picked up some ingredients for all the cooking I’ll be doing this weekend. I bought many, many raisins, shortening and even Tenderflake – Pure Lard. I know! I think that’s the first time in my life I’ve ever purchased lard. Now, usually I would turn my nose up at LARD, but, since my Grandma makes the best pies ever, I will not dis the lard. No way. No how. I will use the lard with her pastry recipe and hope mine turns out half as good as hers. I’m also pretty sure I won’t be able to find Saskatoon berries, so I will have to use blueberries instead. I hate doing that, but, that’s what I’ll have to do.

I’m already in the swing of things – I made Grandma’s chocolate chip cookies tonight (recipe below) as well as a her Creamy Meatballs. However, photographing creamy meatballs proved very difficult (not very flattering) and I’ll have to come up with some kind of way to make it look less like scary brown lumps in a pan. I’ll have to include some ingredients in the photo and add some fresh parsley.

Here’s my Grandma’s recipe for choco chip cookies. And just you wait. This weekend I’ll post the recipe for Barney Google Quickies. I know! Google in the name! Way before THAT Google.

Chocolate Chip Cookies
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 package chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Method:
Cream the shortening and sugars together.
Add the egg into shortening-sugar mixture and mix well. Add vanilla.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, soda and salt together then stir into first mixture. Add chips and nuts.

Drop dough by spoonful onto ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 10- 12 minutes at 375°.
