This is Bec (pronounced Beck) and she is a BIG fan of Vegemite. She is also from Tasmania.
Today she organized a Vegemite sandwich day at the office. In honour of today’s event, I now present you with a tutorial on how to make the best Vegemite on bread snack.
For a good time, click on the READ MORE link to get those directions.
First things first. You need the following ingredients to make Bec’s best Vegemite snack:

1) Find some fresh, unsliced bread. This was quite a feat considering we work downtown. However, there’s a cooking college 4 blocks away at the Vancouver Community College and they sell loaves of bread (made by the students) for 80 cents a loaf. This bread was still warm. And delish.
2) Bec applied margarine to the bread. She also said butter would just as good. So far, so good.
3) Next, Bec squeezed some of the Vegemite out of the tube on a knife.

She was careful to put just the right amount on the knife in order for maximum Vegemite goodness on the bread.
4) Now. Bec explained the importance of applying a thin coat of the spread…I trusted the expert.

5) She then cut the bread up into quarters for all of us:

6) All that was left was to taste the treat. And…
BLECH.
Let’s just say Bec had a lot of treats to eat. No one liked it at all. I’m afraid I don’t “get” Vegemite. It’s so salty…and then bitter and then sour. I have no idea how this stuff ever got popular, but it certainly has been – apparently since before the First World War. It reminded me of beef for some reason – or maybe a seasoning you’d add to gravy or something.
It was a good time, though. Cross-cultural studies can be very entertaining. But sometimes, not very tasty.

Thanks for sharing Carol. I always wondered what those "Men Down Under" were signing about. I reminds me of beef drippings that is so popular in England ~ they eat it with fresh bread & butter too! Now the mystery is solved except now I would have to taste it ….
and he said, i come from a land down under … where beer does flow and men chunder … can’t you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
you better run, you better take cover.
i will be singing this all day … but i love the song, so that’s okay. vgemite on the other hand … um, yuck.
My mum fed us debittered brewer’s yeast. (In food-it is nasty.) I have graduated to Torula Yeast; it tastes better. Lots of people think I am mad for my peanut butter and raisen sandwiches. Childhood foods bring up a certain glow of happiness.
I am glad Bec gets to eat most of her Vegemite. She obviously loves it.
There’s new Vegemite with cream cheese! Yum?
Yeah, I don’t get it either. I mean if you have to spread something that thin for it to be good…is it really worth it? I’m sure dirt would taste good with my margarine too if I just spread it thin enough.
Interesting!
Well at least you found a great place to buy good bread!
