Pie pumpkins

I’m getting things ready for a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Yesterday I ordered a little gobbler (8 to 10 pounds) and on my way home from work today, I picked up some pie pumpkins from a Vancouver market on Hastings and Nanaimo called Donald’s Market. It’s the shizzy! They were the only market I found the pie pumpkins. I’ll roast them up and use them for pie filling and will use my Grandma’s pastry recipe for the pie crust. I’ll also be trying out a new-to-me recipe for stuffing. This recipe is a family favourite from the Nova Scotia Brownes. Mike told me about his favourite stuffing that his Nanny used to make – and that it contained potatoes. Secretly, I doubted this to be true. I have never heard of potato stuffing before. I thought Mike just wasn’t a very observant eater – he got is mashed potatoes in his bread stuffing and thought the meal arrived like that. I am here to report that I am WRONG on that front. The recipe does indeed contain potatoes. 10 pounds of potatoes to be exact. Here’s the recipe with directions:

Nanny Hall’s Turkey Dressing:

(Note: This can be halved and frozen)

-2 lg chopped onions sauteed in margarine

-10 lbs potatoes, cooked and mashed.

-2 loaves white bread in cubes

-1/2 pkg summer savory ( our pkg s savory is 28g )*

- Salt & pepper

Muck all together , stick up the turkey’s arse OR bake in casserole. 325 degree–1 hr or so.

Since the turkey’s going to be 10lbs, I can’t put all the stuffing up the arse. I’ll have to bake some of it.

I was able to pick up all the ingredients I needed at the market – they have an abundance of fruit and vegetables there:

I picked up Harvest Gold plums, crab apples and purple potatoes. We are going to have a lovely feast on Monday.

*According to wikipedia, “Summer savory is a traditional popular herb in Atlantic Canada, where it is used in the same way sage is elsewhere.”
