Getting to know you…

Oh happy day! We got up this morning to find evidence that Donner had left his little carrier, but he always stays in his carrier when we come to check on him. This afternoon we picked up some Feliway – a kitty pheromone miracle cure – that’s supposed to help ease the transition for a kitty to a new home. Wouldn’t you know 20 minutes after we sprayed this stuff in his room (my office!) this happened:

Oscar is up on the desk, and the little fella on the floor looking up is Donner.

That was quick! And kind of accidental. I forgot to shut the door all the way when I was visiting the little guy and Oscar came in. Then Donner scooted right out of his carrier to be with him. They hung out for a bit…

I’m just following Oscar’s lead at this point. He’s been going in there for short visits – they hang out, then Oscar leaves him alone again. Since he seems to know what he’s doing, I’ll just do what he does. Besides, Donner just runs into his carrier at the very sight and sound of Mike or I. It seems this whole introduction thing involves some patience. I just want to pull Donner out, tell him to be fun! We like you! Want to party? Let’s dance! I guess I am NOT the cat whisperer. Thank goodness Mike, Oscar and you are all here for guidance.

Here’s Donner in his usual spot:

And here he is meditating. I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s doing:

Donner’s meow sounds like a bird chirping. He’s been making weird little chattery noises with Oscar. And now they are running around in Mike’s office. I think it’s going well.

A book I can highly recommend is Cat Watching by behaviorist Desmond Morris. He explains how cat behavior is tied to predatory skills practice and initiation of new cat members, too. My experience is to let the cats work it out but make sure each has a safe place to retreat in case they feel threatened. One of my Maine Coons kept a new kitten under a bed for 3 weeks and wouldn’t let him out! I had to go into the bedroom, shut the door and then visit with the little one. After dominance and seniority were asserted and the older felt more at ease they became very good companions. I generally tell the senior cat that I need him/her to show the new one “the ropes” and welcome it. Then I try to give both equal love so no one is jealous. Donner is adorable and I think you’ll all enjoy him! Plus its good for Oscar to have a companion when you are at work. Mazel tov!

Aww congrats on your new baby! They match!

Cleo was like that too, skittish and scared and often still is. But has turned out to be very sweet and affectionate. When not giving out love she rarely leaves her cage though. It’s a safe feeling I think for them.

I love the photo of Donner meditating. Congrats on the new addition!

Maybe Donner’s prison experience made him a bit shy. I am sure he will settle in as soon as he has assessed your character.
