In anticipation of the arrival of my sister and my cousin (SQUEEE!) this Friday, I put a little tweet up on twitter today, announcing my love of greeting people at the airport. I really do. I just love going to the airport any old time, but it’s especially fun when meeting the visitors. My buddy, Kelaine, raised the question to me:
Do you make cardboard signs?
Exciting! I could do that! Make a really big scene at the airport upon their arrival. And that reminded me of the signs we used to see around the Dhahran compound in Saudi Arabia around Christmas time and summer break. Only the signs weren’t at the airport – they were hand crafted and/or printed off on a dot matrix printer and proudly taped to the garage doors. Like Jumanah’s up above.
I think I drove around “camp” taking these photo in 1993 – the last time I was in Saudi. It was Christmas break.

My last visit, I was a “returning student” – basically of the age where we couldn’t live in Saudi Arabia full time because there were no colleges or universities for non-Saudis to attend – in an effort to preserve their culture.
The majority of the returning students were from the United States, but a few of us straggled in to visit our parents from Canada and the UK. All 3 swimming pools in Dhahran would be full of the visitors and, now that I think of it, so was the airport. It was an exciting and fun time. Then we would quietly celebrate Christmas without showing our lit up Christmas trees in any windows -for fear of a note being made to the employee’s (that would be our Dads, usually) file. *Shudder*
Too bad we got rid of the dot matrix printer. That would have made a terrific sign for the visitors this Friday night!

Awesome… brings back memories of The Print Shop!
Hey Phil! You’re back from your trip! Welcome home to you, sir!
You can still print out huge banners and signs with MS publisher..
Oh, I do hope you make a sign. It doesn’t need to be garage door sized. But everyone will think your mom and sister are some kind of Famous Persons they can’t recognize because they arn’t made up and dressed up. That would be soooo cooooool.
Also, you make purdy signs.
