The Gatherers…

After a delicious lunch of turkey sandwiches at a quaint and fussy little restaurant in Fort Langley, we embarked on our annual picking of the berries adventure. This time we went to Krause Berry Farms in Langley. This farm is very well maintained, and there’s pretty much a place for everything with everything is in its place. There is no question about where to enter, pay, eat, or pick berries – they have great signage on the farm. Today there were still some strawberries left to pick but we went straight to the raspberry bushes and got to work.

Picking raspberries is not the back-breaking work that strawberry picking is. We barely had to lean over to get the berries. I quickly developed the “scanning and pulling method” of finding the best berries. I found I developed an eye for finding berries quickly. They aren’t all noticeable at first, so you have to scan the bushes to spot them. Once you find one that looks like it could be a good one, you gently pull it. I should just pop off very easily, if it doesn’t, it’s not quite ready – best to move on.

Mom and C@thy and I divided and conquered and wandered down the rows of bushes. We could smell the fruit on the shrubs.

We picked berries for a couple of hours, and found it very difficult to stop. We were unable to leave the bushes because we kept finding one last good one…okay, okay, we should get going, but wait! I got this nice juicy one!

We made quite a good haul. At $1.75/lb, it turned out we picked 18.86 lbs of raspberries today. Not bad. Tomorrow will be devoted to making jam and I think some other treats, but definitely jam to start. We have pectin to mix and jars to fill!

A few more photos of the day can be found here.

Happy Hollidays! What a lovely thing to do. I love raspberries. That is lots of ‘em. And you didn’t even mention getting scratched!

Nope. These easy pickers were also thorn free! Can you imagine? Pretty much perfect picking conditions all around.

I can’t remember the last time I picked my own berries – normally I head out to Emma Lea Farms on Westham Island in Delta to get mine. I really should try it again…
