Not only is Catherine a champion scout for celebrities, she is also the best spot finder for photos. Somehow we muscled through about 3 layers of people so she was able to get right to the barrier between the cement and the ice skating rink. I used her shoulder as a tripod and leaned in to get the shots. We were kind of getting squashed, but for the most part, people were careful. The majority of the people were figure skating fans – I would like to think they’re well mannered.
The volunteers told us that this was an “impromptu” skate for the celebrities that came for a GE event of some kind. The woman told us it would be up to the athletes if they cared to skate around or not. Michelle Kwan and Scott Hamilton each did a lap around the rink, stopping along the way to take photos, shake hands, and in Catherine’s case, hug her. Yup. She got hugged by Scott Hamilton. She just asked and he obliged. See what happens when you just ask for stuff? You get pins and hugs from figure skaters.

Scott Hamilton is a teeny, tiny man, even on his skates. He was very generous with his time with his fans, so that was very nice to see. I shook his hand after he hugged Catherine. He has small, chilly hands.
Michelle also chatted with Catherine (she’s so good with the famous!) and I just stood there quietly. That’s okay though, there was no shortage of fans for her to talk to – people were so excited to see her and she was very kind letting us all take photos and even signed a few autographs.
Another one of Scott Hamilton. Lovely.
And I like the lens flare on this shot of Michelle Kwan.
I’m a big fan of lens flares and I think it looks a bit halo-ish. Also, she is quite beautiful in person.
Oh man. That was exciting and fun! I’m a so glad Catherine called in for that – and on her day off and everything. How do you think Catherine was feeling after this event?
Pretty darn happy, don’t you think?
Thank you for the call, Catherine! It was a great experience!

Carol… your photos are always so amazing, but these take the cake! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing!
Wishing I was still in Vancouver. Uploading all my pics right now, (and I feel like crying).
I can see why your pic was chosen by that American Asian mag as “Photo of the Day.” Michelle fans will love the photo and be soooo jealous!
THat is soooooooo coooooool! Way to report, Carol Browne! : )
P.S. I bumped into Max who said he would have picked the first place skaters. It was kinda neet to talk to someone who knows their edges.
Hi Carole,
I was looking for an image with an example of lens-flare to use in an exercise for my course (BA, hons, Photography).
May I use your image here of your friend? I’ll credit you as the photographer of course.
Here’s my course blog;
