Man. I had high hopes for this project. But nope. I didn’t let all the healthy sugar, corn syrup and white vinegar cook long enough, and it never made it to the “soft ball” stage of candy making. I was sure I had somehow missed the soft ball stage and was very worried it would turn into that fancy hard sugar they make in competitions on the Food Network. I sure didn’t need to worry about that. My balls wouldn’t stick together at all. I’ve made them before, so I knew this was all wrong. When you get it right, you have to work quickly to get the balls done before the sugar gets too hard and then it’s really stuck together well. It’s about an hour later and the balls are still falling apart. And my Lifesaver decorations aren’t fooling anyone. Ah boo!
I don’t think I’ll get a chance to try this again before Halloween. So I might as well tell you that I had planned to make them into spiders with Pockys for legs.
And a kitty face with Pockys for whiskers.
Instead, we have soggy grey popcorn. Blech. But Mike was all, “Oh great! Lifesavers! Ew. Popcorn blobs.”
Ah well.

ROFL!
With you, not at you..
Awww, that’s just comically awful. Although Mum and I thought they could be like zombies with their eyes falling off or something. Do they at least taste good?
You know, I also thought they looked like zombies with their faces falling off. That’s WAY spookier than spiders (and an Oscar), right? Right? Am I helping? No? Sorry.
Seriously, though, what a bummer!
Boiling hot sugar is deceptive. I have had problems marmalade makeing – on the other side of the soft ball stage. Did you dye the popcorn or the sugar? That is a cool idea.
The gakki ceremony is tonight and I made a holey candle. There were lots of things that went wrong, but I did get a rather mutilated candle out of the deal. I will see if it burns in public!!!
hahahah reminiscent of my most recent attempt at peanut brittle…over a year ago. It turned into nothing more than a syrup glob speckled with peanuts.
Needless to say, I’ve since invested in a candy thermometer.
Feel free to borrow it next go around! lol
Now I know what to get you for xmas! I bet they taste great though!!
They look like turds but taste like sweet sticky popcorn. Who knew? But Carol fired it all in the trash. Boooo!
Carol instead of a candy thermometer you can drop the candy in a glass of water. If it turns into a neat ball then it’s ready. So I’ve been told…
