I wasn’t sure that any birds would be visiting our bird feeder out front. There’s plenty of pedestrians, cars and construction close by – I just assumed they’d be scared off by all of it. I was really wrong about that. I’ve filled up the bird feeder 3 time in the last 2 months. They are definitely overcoming their fear of the noises, people and outdoor cats. While I was out mowing the front yard, the birds would fly from a big tree nearby, buzz down, grab a few seeds and fly off again. They eventually got used to the sound of my camera as I stood about 8 feet away with my zoomy lens.
I might as well admit I’m not enjoying mowing the yard. I’m tempted to create a removable yin yang “hardscape” like this one. And fill in the rest with some bird friendly shrubs and other plants. And I’d like to add some bamboo – some short, non-invasive types.

omg u are lucky!!! we have to fill ours every few days!!! Brace yourself…there will be more lol
Birdie, Num Nums….I love Peter Sellers…The Party. A classic! Chickadees are more interested in food than being scared by people and traffic. If you’ve got your feeder over your lawn it might start to sprout bird seed ;0) I finally was able to do some planting done this weekend (snow in May). The watermelon needs 140 days…not a chance in Calgary, but I’m giving it a go. I did start everything inside but still….Calgary maybe 90 days tops.
Thanks for the Birdie Num Nums Ü
I have baby finches on my balcony. Hungry little buggars, keeps the parents slim just feeding them.
We have a couple feeders in our backyard and it’s a very busy place – they do seem to swoop in and get what they need – especially the chickadees and finches.
Did you know that some bird seed actually kills the grass? So maybe if you’re lucky, they’ll spread it around and you wont’ have to worry about mowing – that or you’ll end up with lots of sunflowers!
