Today I had a big dilemma. Should I go to the Canadian Pavilion on Hastings Street to see how Canada mines it’s diamonds OR do I go to the Olympic Athlete’s Village to see if I could get a shot of the Boxing Kangaroo flag? Last night on the news we heard that Team Australia had put up a huge Boxing Kangaroo flag instead of the country’s official flag and the International Olympic Committee had asked them to take it down. I HAD to get down there to see if they had complied. Had they?
No way! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Hellz no! The flag was still proudly displayed – two stories tall of punchy kangaroo at 1:30 this afternoon. Here’s a zoomy shot below:
I hope they don’t take it down. According to the news tonight, they are going to wait until they get a written notice before they take it down. And if that happens, Surrey AND the City of Vancouver have offered to have the flag hung up for them at their City Halls. And what do many locals think of the flag? They say, “Keep it up!” Aussies have lots of support to keep the boxing kangaroo flag up.
All this made me wonder, who’s on Team Australia at the winter games, anyway? All kinds of skiers, some bobsledders and snowboarders, too. You can see them all here. And now I’m following them on twitter.
Oh, Bec & Sharmy are going to be so proud of me when they see this. They called a flag shop today to see if they could get some Boxing Kangaroo flags. The shop told them they had to make sure they are able to get the approval for that design first, and if they get it, they’ll have flags for them on Wednesday. I think we’ll have a Canadian flag AND the Boxing Kangaroo flag up at the office in the very near future.

I love it – go Aussies!! I’m enjoying your Olympics blogs so much, Carol – it is truly citizen journalism at its best. Are you familiar with the American TV show David Letterman? He’s a comedian and said the other night there is so much concern about having enough snow in Vancouver they are telling visitors to bring their own to the Games~
I so love everything about this story. A random guy on the bus yesterday struck up a conversation about it with me.
I love this story, too. I had no idea there were so many skiers from Australia. Who knew? And we get David Letterman, Pamela S! And he was kind of right about the snow. The local mountains don’t have much snow at all. Our buddy took photos of dump trucks taking snow to Cypress the other day. They are trucking it in from a provincial park nearby called Manning Park – http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ecmanning/
I’m so glad you’re enjoying my citizen journalism, Pam. I’ll keep it coming!
I want one of those flags for my truck.
i think that’s awesome … i cheer on the aussies second to the canadians, of course! i’m wondering, though … how do they get figure skates on the kangaroos?
That flag is terrific. I see, from following your links waaaaay in that on Sunday the Kangaroo won. Great reporting, Carol.
oh I love your photos and posts . I need to get downtown and check out all the stuff! Love the Roo! Apparently, it’s back up.
