This lock was keeping a local book store safe and sound – including a Playboy from 1982 in the window behind bars.

I spent part of my evening answering questions about my quilting habits. It looks like I’ll be the Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild’s Miss August. Kind of funny considering I’ve not finished a full sized quilt yet. I guess they have some faith in me or something. Here’s a teeny, tiny spoiler from the set of questions I was asked. I hope Lysa doesn’t mind.

1. Who taught you to sew and what age were you?
Hmmm…my mom sewed our Halloween costumes and my ballet costumes, but I didn’t try sewing until grade 8 Home Ec. I made a tote bag and sewed the pocket on upside down. I did not enjoy that class.

Sewing things wrong has kind of haunted me every since my upside down pocket incident. Thank goodness I’m in the modern quilting guild where it’s cool to have wonky lines and the corners don’t need to match up. In fact, some of my quilting guild members have stopped using their rotary blades and have been cutting their quilting fabric up with scissors! I know! I have to try it. I wonder if I should go that route with Mike’s t-shirt quilt? I could. I think it would make his quilt even funkier.

LOL! Carol, I SUCKED at the sewing module of home-ec. I got a “D”, the first and only “D” in my life. I can’t sew, but I CAN quilt! I didn’t start quilting till I was 22, because like you, I was haunted by my failure in junior high.

If you do decide to cut fabric with scissors, I recommend investing in a pair of patchwork scissors. They have special blades that grip the fabric, making cutting like butter. Normal scissors will let the fabric slide all over and it will be harder to cut straight. :)
