My old ideas about second hand stores is best described by my buddy, Fiona, who once told me, “You know what you get at Flea Markets? Fleas.” It’s pretty rare that I find stuff I like at places like The Sally An and other thrift shops. I’ve always gone when my friends suggested it – more for the company than actually finding anything in those stinky piles and piles of junk. And even though other people seem to find great stuff, I really don’t think I’m lucky in that department. Mind you, I did find my ceramic potatoes and Skully at the second hand stores (the same one, now that I think about it – The Salvation Army Thrift Shop on the corner of Kingsway and 12th).
The only thing is that Cynthia and Denise seem to find the coolest stuff when they go. So today when I went out to Mission to see my buddies, I suggested we go to a thrift shop. We started off at the God Bless You in the Parking Lot shop and I found six old fashioned, made in Canada, jars for preserves and picked them up for $1.61. I marched out of the store with a box of stuff and had change back from a looney! Feeling pretty good about that, I asked Cynthia & Denise if we could go to another one. That’s when Denise drove us over to a store in Abbotsford called MCC (or something like that) and we walked into the great big store and started looking around.
When we got to the housewares sections, I was completely smitten. I found a whole collection of fancy Jello molds in all kinds of fruit shapes with prices ranging from 40 cents to a dollar. I stocked up on my Jello molds, that’s for sure. I found some more jam jars, also made in Canada, with cool glass lids. It looks like I’ll have to find those orange rings that seal the pieces of glass together. I bought 2 dozen of those cool jars for $10. Uh, I also bought a white ceramic Christmas tree – this thrift shop had a Christmas SECTION!! And a few other items, like this butter dish:

A peeg butter dish for $1.50. I have never felt so rich in all my life. Cynthia and Denise helped me carry all 3 boxes of stuff out to the car.
I think I’m going to have to buy some Jello. Lots of Jello.
