Picking my soccer favourites

Seeing as the World Cup starts next week, I thought I’d pick my favourite teams now. Since I don’t follow soccer any other time, my reasons for my choices are based on random reasons. Here are my favourites:

1) Saudi Arabia – Wait, what? They didn’t make the cut this time? Oh. Crap. I guess they were full up with guys laying down on the field and rolling around with one knee up as soon as the game started. Or at least that’s how I remember Saudi Arabia soccer in the 80′s. That and the announcer screaming, “HATHA GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!”

2) New Zealand – because that’s where the Flight of the Conchords come from, of course. And the All Blacks rugby team. Don’t forget them! I mentioned the All Blacks to one of my friends once, and she thought I was being racist. She doesn’t know about rugby, I guess.

3) Netherlands – Just for the record, that’s Mike’s number 1 choice. For me, I’m choosing them because I love the Amsterdam airport.

4) Slovakia – Ever since I took the photo of some of the Slovakian Hockey Team members during the Olympics this year, I’m a big fan of Slovakia. It also doesn’t hurt that’s where Pavel Demitra is from.

So those are my choices!

And here I thought this wasn’t a sports blog.

A big thank you to Vera for the use of her Cheburashka – the little brown mascot shown above holding the soccer ball. That little guy plays his theme song when you press his hand.

I totally remember how excited everyone was when Saudi got in World Cup! Holidays and shooting guns in the air! We were also vacationed in Spain in 1982 during the World Cup though we didn’t go to any games – the merchandise was everywhere!

When I was in Paris and Naples the summer of 2006, so that was pretty exciting. People would pile into the cafes to watch the game and then march to the Champs Elysee when France won. We watched the final in Naples which was France vs Italy and I was scared for our lives when Zidane head-butted the Italian. It was dangerous and crazy when Italy won. 4 yr olds zooming around on motorized scooters, random fireworks, drunken debauchery all night long. Also, I loved the little old Italian men trying to teach me the White Stripes anthem.

I wish there was more world cup fever in Lethbridge. But needless to say I’m cheering for Les Blues and the Azzurri, for a world cup re-match!
