What a glorious sight! Tonight at the stroke of 6:03 pm, the big W was lit up in all it’s glory downtown. It sits upon a great big stand and contains LED lights this time, so it’s a bit more environmentally friendly that way.
I didn’t attend the open house inside the building, but instead decided to watch it from across the street. It was just me, a suit-y man with an i-phone and a lady who kept saying, “Come on! It’s after 6:00. Come on! It’s 6:01! Oh. Come on!” That kind of explains my knowledge of the time it lit up – I had a commentator standing behind me until 6:03.
This area of Vancouver is not known to be the nicest part of town, but I realized tonight that it felt a bit safer, cleaner and lit better.
Would you like to see more W’s? Yah? Okay! Here you go!
I took this one before the W was lit up – around 5:58 or so. I used that night flash setting where the shutter feels really slow while the flash goes off. Somehow I got a strange light up effect even though I was way too far away to light up the building – maybe it was a street lamp that helped gather in all that light. Then I cross processed it photoshop with good old Orton Effect.
And here’s the big W with some lens flare. I like this one. Because it has lens flare.
And, here’s one more shot with the wires for the buses lit up, too. That’s why there’s a grid below.
And on the way home, I picked up some tacos from that new Mexican restaurant on Hastings. It’s called La Taqueria and they make the yummiest tacos ever. The tacos are little – they suggest 4 tacos as 1 serving for a person. I got the variety pack, so we got to taste one of each. Very good call. We’ll be going back there for dinner for sure. They use fresh ingredients and lots of lime. So delicious.

Wonderful to see it back
Great shots!! And mmm tacos…mmmmm!!
It’s nice that the history of Woodwards is being honoured and it’s so nostalgic. I’m glad it’s back too.
I saw the W on Saturday in the sunshine. When I saw it ‘in the flesh’ I realized it always stood on that Eifel Tower effort. It is good to see it back. I like your photos, especially the one before they lit it up. The streetcar lines are cool too. I realized that your ‘artist rendition’ is pretty accurate!
