This one's for Andrea Dubbya

in General

Our cousin Andrea cracks up when she sees my mom’s cell phone. I think she secretly covets the thing. Here’s why.

She calls it The Inspector Gadget phone. I think it’s the great big antenna she likes. And the size of the actual head set is pretty good. And that it has no extras whatsoever – no voicemail, even! What? No voicemail? Nope. Nothing. It was all the rage in 1998, I’m sure.

I won’t go too much into the whole dump fiasco that happened today, but just know the following:

1) The Coquitlam Transfer Station does not accept computers, computer parts or monitors. We were instructed to call 604-recycle for places to take the computer stuff.

2) Ralph’s Auto Parts in Surrey accepts computers AND monitors. They will also accept dismantled computer parts, unlike some other recycling places.

3) If you just have a monitor to get rid of, you can take them to the bottle depot. That’s what they told us.

4) We took the long way to get to Ralph’s Auto Parts – just take the Patello Bridge. It’s on the right hand side right off the bridge. Sheesh.

5) I wanted it on record that despite our urge to just throw the stuff out of the moving truck, we did the right thing and took the computer parts to the recycling depot as directed – despite the inconvenience.

But you know what made it worth driving 2 extra hours with our garbage in the truck? One of the workers at the Transfer Station said this to us:

“Welcome to Garbage Heaven. I hope you enjoy your dump.”

Heh.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that phone! That is IT. I am throwing my blackberry in the garbage right now and I am going to go surf the electronics graveyards for an inspector gadget cellphone right now! I can just see it now….you’re holding it and chatting on it and then all of a sudden a couple helicopter blades would pop out of the top of the antenna and whisk the talker away :) Aunt Audrey better watch it next time I am in town, I just might help myself to it :) Thanks for posting that it totally made my day! I totally wish I was there!

Who would have thought: a phone that you can just make phone calls one. And one large enough it’s not in danger of being accidently shoved in my ear..

I heard that the "brick" phones, refurbished, were all the rage in Japan.

My first cell phone was something from radio shack called a transportable. It was a handset connected via a cord to a 12 pound battery/transmitter that had an ergonomic ( don’t believe that was a word back then) strap to carry the behemoth over your shoulder. I was the envy of nerds everywhere.

btw: I wonder who would get a better signal in border line places, your Mom’s phone or a modern 3g device? I would bet money on the one with the external antennae.

To the William Tell Overture:

"to the dump, to the dump, to the dump, dump dump.."

Just the mostest fun..

Ralph’s Auto Parts…what the!? You should have just gave your old computer junk to C@thy to take back to Calgary with her. You can just drop it off at any Staples in Calgary.

They even recycle old speakers, you name it. I had a huge pair of circa 1989 oak venear speakers, that at one time doubled as tall end tables. I just unearthed them from the basement this week and off they went to Staples to be stripped down. I’m not sure what they will do with those parts but they are outta my basement that’s all I know.

I love the quote….I hope you enjoy your dump. Very clever.
