A lovely visit up to Squamish

Today was a perfect day for a road trip. We headed up on the newly expanded Sea-to-Sky Highway – which seems to be about 3/4 of the way finished, but already the locals have found a difference in the commute time down to Vancouver. It takes about 45 minutes to get downtown now, as opposed to the hour and five minutes of the old highway.

Mike and I were invited to our friend’s house for a barbeque. I’ve got more photos from the day if you hit “read more”.

Please note: due to the size of the photos, I can only do 1 photo per post or else it will take forever to load my website. But if you click to the extended part, I can post more there. Did that just make sense? I sure hope so.

Before we headed up to Kathy and Bruce’s place, we stopped and toured the very small downtown core of Squamish. Many of the shops were closed as it was Sunday. When we asked some of the people we met at the barbecue why the shops are closed in the height of tourist season, they explained to us that ever since the Royal Hudson stopped running, the tourists haven’t been too plentiful around those (un- fixable repairs) parts. This is another hit for Squamish as the town used to be a logging town and a train town. Now the tourists don’t come as often, so it seems to be more of a suburb to Vancouver and Whistler than anything.

But have no fear, the Chieftain hotel is still open.

After the tour of the whole downtown, we headed over to the BBQ for some big steaks and met some new people.

Here’s Bruce giving the tour. Kathy & Bruce’s place have a huge backyard, with a glacial creek running through it. Bruce built a bridge over the creek to a little fire pit where people were cooking all kinds of things over the coals. Their backyard is heaven.

That’s a classic neon sign – it should get redone. We spent many a night there after spending the day scrambling over the Chief.
