Everywhere you turn around Vancouver these days there’s something new to see. See what they did to the Vancouver Art Gallery? They turned it into Cathy Mechanic’s mom’s couch. That was her quote, not mine. But I think it looks awesome.
According to Art Daily, this is part of the Cultural Olympiad in the city – showcasing various art pieces during the Vancouver 2010 Games.
And just up the street from the Vancouver Art Gallery, a little shanty town has popped up, right next to the fanciest building in Vancouver, The Shangri-La.
Canadian artist, Ken Lum created this. It was built in a very shallow fountain – I love the reflections in the water.
And over near where I work, new signs, lights, and benches are being put up all over Granville Street. Here are two signs right outside our building. I’m ashamed to say I’m not quite sure what languages they are, but I’ll give it a whirl.
Russian? My guess? Welcome! in Russian.
And sign number 2:
Korean! I’m sure of it! And the sign says…Starbucks, right around the corner. I should get a translating job.
And then there was this guy in the mall:
Holy crap. See! Everyone is getting into the action! SASQUATCH!
Guess what? The Olympic Torch is going to be in my hood on the 11th. I believe I’ll be “working from home” in the morning that day. This is where it will be:
…from there it’s taken to Hastings Street at Duthie Avenue where the second leg is expected to start 10:33 a.m. The Olympic flame heads west, then south on Kensington Avenue, east on Curtis Street, south on Cliff Avenue and west on Aubrey Street. Then it’s south on Sperling Avenue and west on Broadway where it stops just short of Kensington at around 11:13 a.m. [SOURCE]
That is less than a 20 minute walk from our house. It’s just down the street from us!

Hee! The couch museum. I like it.
And I think that’s Greek, not Russian. I should maybe sort of know, because I took Greek in high school. But I’m not sure…
And ooooh the torch rally! I hope you can go and see it
I’m so glad you are our citizen reporter… Who else would photograph Sasquatches for me?
Last night on the news they were talking about all the free thiings you can do during the olympics, including aa zip line over Robson Square. I immediately thought this was an adventure you might take for us, your dear loyal stalkers.
Jeesh! The art gallery now looks like my couch in a differnt colourway. I sudder to think what that says about anything.
I was tripping over the lumber being delivered to the shallow fountain when I popped down to Dressew. I had no idea some artist was resurrecting Vancouver in the days of my great-great-grandfather. (I am not sure of the ‘great’s there – I may have too many.)
I am concerned about you zipping over Robson Square, but I am waiting with baited breath for pictures of the torch relay.
You can count on me for your citizen reporting! I still need to speak to my boss, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be at the Burnaby leg of the torch relay. So. Cool.
