I think I’ve skated once since I was 8 years old or so. That could make me a bad Canadian. And I don’t speak French either, so I’d better be careful or I could get stripped of my citizenship. In my defense, I do love watching hockey and really enjoy snow-shoeing, so perhaps I’m okay. In any event, I went over to the newly renovated ice skating rink over on Robson Square right next to the Vancouver Art Gallery to see the new digs after reading about it on Vancity Buzz.
The rink is covered with dome glass tops and goes underneath Robson Street. It’s pretty cool down there and they’ve got it all lit up with blue lights, which turns out my camera doesn’t exactly like. I’ll have to go back to see if I can get some less noisy photos. I can see the pixels in there. I changed the white balance and everything. Still, the photos were quite speckled. I’ll also try a lower ISO next time. I’ll figure it out.
Meanwhile, over on the other side of rink, I spotted a friend…

I didn’t just stalk him, I went over to see him and chit chatted. That was nice. Dave O always has a hug available – an added bonus before boarding the bus home.

It’s beautiful down there and I think I just may rent skates and try it myself in the near future. How bad could it be?
I’ll let you know after. Hopefully I won’t have to wear a cone like the cat.

Hee. I went skating at UBC last Friday. It had been about 12 years for me and I thought it would come back pretty quick but I was a disaster! Fun though. I'll definitely have to check out this Robson rink since I live right around the corner almost.

Me and skating never really did well together. Weak ankles …
I love the crazy blue light here! It makes it look like everyone's skating on a space station or something.
Oh, and I'll join in the “weak ankles” club here — I'm a lousy skater, even though I took skating as a gym option for 7 years in school. Although I never injured myself badly enough to have to wear a collar like Oscar's, so I suppose I should consider that a success!
Skating is great exercise. When the medics come to get me they get a good cardio work out.
