A portrait of a seagull

Just look at those chicken legs!

I’m not sure if you heard, but last weekend I took 12 photos over 12 hours for the Vancouver Film Marathon. I spent many hours at the beach, and while I took a break, I noticed this seagull walking towards me. Sadly, I had already taken my photo for the theme of the hour – Human Nature. I think this guy would have worked for that theme as well. Sadly, I’m rarely patient, so once I saw a family of three on the beach, I took their photo. I sat down on the sand and relaxed and then this little guy showed up. He let me take a few photos of him before he left – probably because I didn’t feed him.

Guess what? More 12X12 Film Marathon information. I was interviewed by Dave Gerry for TelusTV (Mike’s cool with that even though he works at Shaw.) and oh happy day! I didn’t get left on the cutting room floor. How did that happen? I guess they wanted to highlight someone in bad need of a tan on their show. Seriously, my face is white, white, white.

Here’s where I got mentioned: (SNORT! I don’t think this post could be more self-centered if I tried at this point.)

1:54 is my High Road photo

2:08 – my interview. I hope you notice my wide open eyes. I don’t really talk like this, do I? Also, I don’t ever recall using the word, “intolerant” before, let alone, “low light conditions”. I think the problem here is that I was trying to “act natural”. Oh boy.

But on the plus side, I can’t very well ask people to do things I’m not able to do, so I felt compelled to accept this invitation for an on-camera interview. I guess this means now I can ask even more people to take their photos.

Enjoy the video! All kinds of participants are interviewed and they highlighted various photos in it, too. 4 minutes well spent for sure.

The high road

Oh. My. God. Will I ever stop talking about the Vancouver Film Marathon? I will soon, I promise. But I did want to post just one more photo because I do like it. This is what the Lions Gate Bridge looked like around 9:30 am on September 12, 2010. I was on the West Van side of the bridge. The haziness was just part of the lens and the low lighting – it was overcast and maybe a bit rainy. I think it looks a lot like a photo from the 40s, kind of like this one.

That’s over until next year, so in the meantime, I uh, signed up for ANOTHER film photo event. Cynthia told me about it – it’s called A Million Little Pictures and that starts next spring. I have time to prepare. Also, they provide the camera – it’s a disposable. I selected the theme, “the people I know”. So you know what that means. YOU’RE getting your photo taken. What? I need to practice. After seeing this winning portrait, I need to practice my portraits and take more photos of animate objects with eyes.

And finally, some actual crafty news, Thursday is the Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild meeting. We’ll be sewing! YAY! I just need to pick out my fabric and have it ready to go. I’d love to make it Halloween themed (of course) so PERHAPS it’s time to make a trip to the Dressew on my lunch hour tomorrow.

Dreamy.

Easy as pie.

We just got home from the big 12X12YVR exhibition. We all got our negatives to take home, so I couldn’t wait to get home to use my new scanner. That was a well attended event! My buddy (and frequent commenter) Leah arrived and hung out with us for a bit. We stayed long enough to see the big reveal as to who won. There were 16 winners in total – 1 for best photo in each theme (that’s 12 winners there), 1 best photo of all , 1 runner up best photo of all, 1 winner for best theme of all and 1 runner up winner for best theme. There were lots of great photos – I’m sure they’ll be posted up soon. The winner of best picture was excellent – it was very cool portrait of a guy smoking. Also, Mini-Fig Monday Kenny swept with his theme all in Legos! It killed. I cannot wait to get started on my Christmas Lego set now.

I’ve scanned in few of my negatives and picked this one – theme number 11 – Easy As Pie. I know, it’s not very original – just buy a pie and rest it on a structure in Yaletown. But by this time it was hour #11 out stomping around in the rain, so this is the best I could come up with. The good news is that pie is in focus! Huzzah!

More good news – all my photos came out. 3 were VERY underexposed and a couple were cut off – that pesky viewfinder. I still need to practice with it. I’ll put up more tomorrow. I’m getting up early tomorrow with Mike to drop him off at work. He starts at 7:00 am. EW. I’ll head back to bed after I drop him off, that’s for sure.

“Secret World”

September 18, 2010

A few days before the Vancouver Photo Marathon, I noticed this graffiti in the alley behind the YWCA on Hornby Street while heading back to the office from an employer meeting. I didn’t take a photo that day, but made a mental note of it for a later date. And that date arrived last Sunday [...]

I did it.

September 12, 2010

I did it! And now it’s time to sleep. Holy man. The Vancouver Photo Marathon was long, but fun. It was 11.25 hours of good times. I a photo of the Lions Gate Bridge, the giant severed head in Yaletown, a pie and my favourite theme, “vague”. If there’s one thing I can do well, [...]

Eight out of twelve ain’t bad

January 16, 2010

Way back on December 12th, Mike and I spent 12 hours taking photos around Vancouver with our little toy cameras along with 58 other photographers. Man. That seems like a long time ago now. We drank lots of coffee and I snoozed on the Blenz stuffed chairs in between the announcements of the next theme [...]
