Lorne turned 49 years young today. Huzzah! We celebrated with sushi at Sushitown and then with cupcakes and tea at our place, afterward. It was a lovely time. Yup. We really partied hard tonight – with chamomile tea and everything.

Picnic at the Park

Today we had a little picnic for the birthday girls in Mission. We had excellent summer weather again, and this big tree provided a perfect shady, breezy spot for us. After today’s outing in the sun, I’ve decided to have more picnics. I’ll somehow convince Mike to have come with me. Picnics CAN be fun – especially when you go with Denise (she’s in the black dress) – she brought a little dolly to wheel out a case filled with treats, tea and a thermos of hot water. Makin’ whoopee…pies

And boy, did I ever. I made them way too big though. See the whoopee pies below? They’re each about as big as my fist.

That makes for a very large cupcake, that’s for sure. And that’s pretty much what these are – a thick cake batter dropped onto cookie sheets and iced with an old fashioned icing recipe – the 7 minute frosting – you whip sugar and eggs on a double boiler for 7 minutes until it turns into a smooth and shiny meringue-y frosting. Very sweet and nice on the chocolate cakey-pies cookies combo. And, I think I’ll have to cut these bad boys in half before serving them. They’ll be half cakes instead.

I used these delicious recipes at Dinner with Julie.

I’ll let you know the response tomorrow! Will whoopee pies replace cupcakes? They could! I think the sandwich angle is a good one. Also, the Amish angle works for me, too. I *heart* Amish quilts and beards.

Whoopee!
