Guess who’s birthday it is today? My sister, C@thy’s! Now is the time I blow the dust off some old photos in the archives and have a good time at my sister’s expense!

I am so glad we have lots of photos of us when we were little. It was like my mom knew facebook would be invented for us to share these photos.

I had a difficult time selecting which one to use this year, so I decided to share 3. First up, snorkle photo!

This was our first vacation we went on after we moved to Saudi Arabia. We were on “repat” – short for repatriation. Although repatriation means going back to your country of origin, we called any vacation out of Saudi Arabia, repat, whether it involved going back to Canada or not.

Our first repat was to Greece, specifically a little island called Corfu. We went to the beach every day. I vaguely remember hearing someone talking about topless sunbathing – kind of a shock after living in a country where all the local woman are covered from head to toe. I don’t remember seeing any boobies, but someone, who shall remain nameless, said, “She looked like she was laying on a couple of water balloons!”. Heh.

C@thy’s been a jock her whole life and a good swimmer. I found a few swimming photos of her in the archives.

The hockey guy

The coffee shop on the way to Vancouver had their mannequin out yesterday for the Canucks game. They put an old school jersey on the blue guy. The pink mannequin was also out playing hockey against the blue one, but it didn’t have a jersey on it.

I had to try the double exposure trick to it. It turned out okay…

Down by the waterfront

in Vancouver

Ever since I moved here in 1991, many locals – yup, there are such things as “locals” in Vancouver. Even though most of us come from other cities in Canada, there are some people who were born here and have lived in this city their whole lives – ANYWAY, I’ve heard stories of the guys working on the waterfront, loading and unloading big container ships in East Van. Oh the shenanigans! But I won’t mention that most of these stories involved some illegal activity, i.e. Oops! How did that box of fancy handled knives not make it into the shipping container on its way to its proper owner? What time is it and why am I sitting at the Waldorf Hotel when I’m supposed to be on the job moving boxes into containers and stuff? You know, THOSE kind of shenanigans. So this is where it all happens – over on Powell Street and the surrounding area. I just happened to be in the area today meeting with an employer and stopped to take some photos of this tough, industrial part of town.

Shall I start off with some high heels?

Makin’ whoopee…pies

by Carol Browne on June 8, 2010 · 4 comments

And boy, did I ever. I made them way too big though. See the whoopee pies below? They’re each about as big as my fist.

That makes for a very large cupcake, that’s for sure. And that’s pretty much what these are – a thick cake batter dropped onto cookie sheets and iced with an old fashioned icing recipe – the 7 minute frosting – you whip sugar and eggs on a double boiler for 7 minutes until it turns into a smooth and shiny meringue-y frosting. Very sweet and nice on the chocolate cakey-pies cookies combo. And, I think I’ll have to cut these bad boys in half before serving them. They’ll be half cakes instead.

I used these delicious recipes at Dinner with Julie.

I’ll let you know the response tomorrow! Will whoopee pies replace cupcakes? They could! I think the sandwich angle is a good one. Also, the Amish angle works for me, too. I *heart* Amish quilts and beards.

Whoopee!
