Sneaking around on the balcony

Oscar loves it out on the balcony in the summer – he’s funny to watch out there – he moves in slow motion across the balcony and sits under one of the chairs against the wall of the house. Then he just sits there like a gargoyle. I don’t leave him out there “unsupervised” because the railings on the balcony are hanging on by a thread. I’ve started putting plant pots against the railing. I guess you call that, “getting ready for summer”.

Guess what? After I posted my watermelon post the other day, Andrea from the National Watermelon Promotion Board in Canada emailed me and asked me if I’d like a CD of watermelon recipes. I completely took her up on her offer and will be trying out the recipes once I get them. In the meantime, I checked out their website and made this watermelon slushie drink. I just halved the recipe. I didn’t need 6 drinks. My liver can only take so much flushing in one night.

Watermelon Berry Slush

Ingredients:
4 cups cubed, seeded watermelon
1 (10 ounce) package frozen raspberries – I had mixed frozen berries, so I used them. YUM.
1 (12 ounce) bottle sparkling mineral water

Instructions:
Drop watermelon through food chute of a blender with the motor running. Add frozen raspberries alternately with mineral water, processing until smooth.

Delish! Not too sweet and very refreshing. I’ll making that one again.

And again.

You can expect more watermelon recipes from me in the next few weeks. I’m a watermelon convert now.

Testing 1, 2, 3…

It looks like we’re going to make a short video for work, so the next couple of weeks, I’ll be practicing some video making – including editing. And the coolest part? This is the tiny video camera I’ll be using.

The HD Camera

It’s a point and shoot Canon and it’s smaller than an iphone. Under the right lighting conditions, the video looks very sharp – very nice. I’ll be practicing that over the next few days. And another thing I have to learn? Editing. Uh, that’s a bit tough. I’ll be learning how to use some online editing software – apparently easy to learn – however, I couldn’t even figure out how to get it started, so I’ve got a lot of learning to do.

Happily, Oscar cooperated with a video today. He usually walks away these days when I bring out my camera (unlike that hambone, Donner).

Please consider this video a “before” edit. I expect to present you with an edited version in the very near future. This 27 second video will be considerably shorter.

The Smashy Brothers

*I have no idea why Oscar’s eyes are looking gigantic like that*

Now that Donner is all settled in, it is not unusual to hear things going smash in the night. Donner and Oscar are good buddies. Other than Oscar trying eat Donner’s food at dinner time – but Donner has been getting better and better about not giving up his dinners these days. It seems right around bedtime, they start tearing around the house. They chirp and call for each other and then we’ll hear them running around the house. And a few times, a big smash. Last night it was just some keys off the ledge. The night before that, it was the garbage can in my office – they tipped it over and the shredder on the top flew off. No one was injured or harmed by their hijinx. The best part is their reaction once they’ve been caught. They just stay still wherever they are – frozen – hoping no one will figure out it was them. They are total goofballs.

You know who else could be in the goofball category? My sister and I, shown here:

Back to normal

January 5, 2010

Oscar’s become a very good pal. Over the last few months he seems more confident around people that visit and he’s much friendlier with us. He’s a bit more tolerant of being patted on the tummy now and it turns out he likes Frisky cat food over the fancy gourmet Turducken we bought him (at [...]

The Un-Christmas Card of 2009

December 25, 2009

I had an image in my mind for Oscar for our annual Christmas card this year. In my mind, I pictured Oscar looking cute and gently playing with a Christmas decoration that I had nestled in a white feather boa, so it looked like snow and so it would have a nice contrast against Oscar’s [...]

Don’t hate him because he’s beautiful

November 30, 2009

Oscar is back to his old, well, young self – he’s meowing in the mornings, batting little rabbit fur mice into the air and running laps around the house for no apparent reason. He seems more friendly than before his operation, which is a bit strange, but I’m glad for that. All his patches of [...]

Only 3 more sleeps

November 24, 2009

Oscar has been very patient with his Shakespeare collar on these last few days. However, this morning was the first time he pretty much refused to keep it on. He was up early this morning flicking it off with his paw. I’d put it back on and pop! Collar off again. Mike finally tightened it [...]

Dusting off the nutcracker

November 17, 2009

Today after work I came home and dusted off the the first Christmas decoration of the year. I had other plans for tonight, but that’s as far as I got, because I fell asleep on the couch with Oscar. I blame the electric blanket. Oscar really seems to like it – and, well, anything to [...]

Moon kitty reporting for duty…

November 14, 2009

I do realize this blog has been very Oscar-heavy these last few days. I’m hopeful tomorrow I’ll have a different subject to photograph. But for today, I’m happy to report that Oscar continues to improve. We started calling him Moon Kitty because the after day we brought him home from the animal clinic, they found [...]
