Stretchy and scratchy

The good thing about Oscar is that he only likes to scratch stuff that doesn’t matter. He loves the scratching posts on the stairwells as well as this laundry basket. And that’s all he touches with his claws – except the back of my legs when he gets impatient for dinner. And even then, he’s in gentle claw mode. Also, I don’t think he likes getting his claws stuck in the fabric on the back of my pants.

I am thoroughly enjoying my Lensbaby (thanks Mike!). I’ve been practicing with the focus and little by little, I’m getting better and getting used to manual mode.

If I keep practicing, maybe one day I’ll be able to take photos half as beautiful as this photographer – Vivian Maier. She took over 100,000 film photos and never shared with them anyone. I wish there was flickr in the 50′s for her! She would have been an internet sensation! If you have 10 minutes, the video below is worth watching.

Speaking of street photography, I have a photo I like of a bus on Granville Street…but it’s not in focus, but I still like it.

Out in the snow

Even though there are free trails up on the mountain – I’ll find them in the future – I opted to buy a trail pass for $9. I thought it was a good idea since this was my first trip of the season. I thought it would be tough to get lost if I stayed in the park. Good call by me. Even though the parking lot was packed, there weren’t too many people on the snowshoe trails, that’s for sure. And it was very quiet…you could hear the hum of the tow-rope, but that was about it. Even with all the people around, it wasn’t noisy at all.

I picked a great day to go out, that’s for sure.

Day tripping

Tomorrow we’re getting up early (Oh no! On a Saturday? YES!) and heading over to Adams River outside of Kamloops. We’re going out there to see the biggest run of salmon in 100 years. It’s the cruel cycle of life for these poor fish. They swim for months and months to get here to spawn and then, it’s game over, dude. If they make it that far, that is. Some don’t quite get there, sadly. This is one sad event. Why are we going again?

Also, apparently it’s pretty smelly – I guess dying and dead fish can get that way. And there have been rumors of bear sightings, too. I guess smelly, rotting fish is a bear’s delight!

I’ve been thinking about the gear to take with us all week long. I’ll be bringing my Nikon with the long lens, the stock lens and the wide angle. I’ll be bringing my trusty little point and shoot (digital) and the yellow banana cam. I’m going to try putting the last 2 cameras in a ziplock so I can put them right in the water with the fish. But just in case that doesn’t work, I picked up a disposable waterproof camera so we can stick that right in the water and not worry about destroying the cameras with water. Although, the banana cam has no electronics, so it’s fine if it gets wet, but I’m sure the film inside would me another story if that got splashed or soaked.

So that’s the plan! We’ll start early, and get home in time for the first Canucks game of the season, and so we won’t miss the announcement that Ryan Kesler is the newest Canucks’ Captain. I’m feeling even better about my prediction today. And…

Let’s get it ON!!!

Heh. That never gets old.

Avant-garde

Me: (Proudly) Hey Mike, Kelaine told me she likes how my photos have taken an avant-guard style with the toy camera.

Mike: *Laughing* Do you know what that means?!?

Me: Yes. *shifty eyes* I looked it up and…(I’ll leave out my answer because it was wrong. Even after I looked it up the day before. DUH.)

Mike: No it doesn’t! It means it’s weird and no one understands it! HA! Wait, I mean, it’s open to interpretation.

Oh well. Now that I’ve looked it up again, it means this:

Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.

I’m not sure if this is avant-garde or not, but I like how the building in this photo looks like a painting. Somehow I took it with the Diana.

I have decided that this is the camera lens I’ll be using for the film marathon next month. I’ll just be using this one from now until the big day so I can get the hang of it. I’ll be taking it with me to Toronto and practicing there. I like the way this lens takes photos of landscapes and it is flattering if I want to take photos of people:

I’m not sure this make sense.

July 21, 2010

I found this licence place on a car in the BCIT parking lot downtown – located at 555 Seymour Street, Vancouver. Just an aside – that’s a good parking lot because 1) it’s $14 for the day = a good price for an entire day in these parts and 2) it’s well lit and very [...]

A new project – Grandma’s Cookbook

July 20, 2010

This mysterious person on the scooter is not my Grandma. I’m not sure who this is, but this photo was found in one of Grandma’s photo albums. Currently my mom and sister are on a photo finding mission and the best ones will be an addition to the Wilson family cookbook – our current project. [...]

In the ‘hood

July 19, 2010

I was invited to my friend’s place this evening. She has a beautiful flat roofed house up the street from us with this view of the Strait of Georgia. The North Shore is directly opposite Sharon’s house and you can see all the way up to Deep Cove and this leads up to Indian Arm. [...]

Beans…beans…

July 18, 2010

Editor’s note: The pork people don’t know who I am. I just found this recipe a few months ago and keep on using it, so I’m giving credit where credit is due. This Caribbean Pork, Rice, and Beans recipe (found on the Pork Marketing Canada site called www.putporkonyourfork.ca) is becoming my favourite summer recipe this [...]

Loafing

July 17, 2010

I ran out of stuff to do with Mom & C@thy yesterday, so we ended up in Stanley Park and walked about 5 kilometers along the beach. The temperature was perfect with a nice breeze. I’ll have to remember that the next time it feels too hot at home – the seawall is where it’s [...]
