Yesterday’s news

I’m getting caught up. After the doggy post yesterday, I had to to go to bed. Here’s a couple more photos from yesterday.

Yesterday morning at 8:40-ish, the news van was outside our building doing a piece on the Mint Pavilion. At that time, the estimated wait to see the medals was 7 hours. And my boss thought I was weird to take the morning off to stand in the line for 2 hours across the street from my office building last week.

The line was just as long this morning when I got into the office. People really want to see those medals.

Last evening, we walked up to Yaletown for the greatest flickr party of the year and as we were permitted entrance to the “private function” (Heh! That was for us!) there was someone doing an interview in the Yahoo! Live Sports area. That someone? A hockey player who was a contestant on the CBC hit reality show, Battle of the Blades.

Sled Dogs!

Yet another day with another lunch time adventure! I had heard on twitter this morning the Huskies would be down in Yaletown at the RoundHouse for a little while at lunch. At 11:45, I left the office and hopped 1 stop to the RoundHouse. I got off the train, went over to the spot. No dogs. Oh no! I had missed the dogs and today is their last day in Vancouver.

But just to be sure, I texted my pin pal, Ariane, to see if she knew where they were. JACKPOT! She called me right away to let me know the dogs were down at the SeaWall on Davie – only 2 blocks away or so. I found that kind of odd. I thought I would be able to those dogs barking and yapping and being noisy. Don’t those dogs just bark and bark and yap until they’re all running?

A couple of minutes later, and behold! The huskies and one of their owners, Olav Falsnes, hanging out by the marina all decked out in their Northern best outfits.

Today’s theme: Traffic

Mike and I headed to downtown this afternoon for a little shopping adventure. We are on a mission to find an official Winter Games mug to send to a friend in Nova Scotia. We also wanted to see the W2 Social Media Centre to see where the cool kids hang out.

God only knows why, but Mike thought we should go to The Bay to find the mug. The Bay with the huge line up. ZOINKS. However, we were pleasantly surprised when the line up was only 1/2 a block long. So we stood in the line and in about 20 minutes, we were inside the building along with a billion other people, looking high and low for a mug. No luck. Oh well. However if you’re looking for a Quatchi, they’ve got them on sale right now.

I still have a few ideas left as to where to find the mug.

The main areas for human traffic is all along Granville Street up to Robson. There are p0lice at every open street directing traffic so no one wanders out into where the cars are driving.

Here’s what Granville looked like this afternoon:

Not only is Catherine a champion scout for celebrities, she is also the best spot finder for photos. Somehow we muscled through about 3 layers of people so she was able to get right to the barrier between the cement and the ice skating rink. I used her shoulder as a tripod and leaned in to get the shots. We were kind of getting squashed, but for the most part, people were careful. The majority of the people were figure skating fans – I would like to think they’re well mannered.

The volunteers told us that this was an “impromptu” skate for the celebrities that came for a GE event of some kind. The woman told us it would be up to the athletes if they cared to skate around or not. Michelle Kwan and Scott Hamilton each did a lap around the rink, stopping along the way to take photos, shake hands, and in Catherine’s case, hug her. Yup. She got hugged by Scott Hamilton. She just asked and he obliged. See what happens when you just ask for stuff? You get pins and hugs from figure skaters.

My name is Carol, and I’m a pin nerd.

February 17, 2010

Today I loaned Mike my camera so he could take photos of people like Michael Buble, Stephen Colbert, and The Sedins. I shot all day with my banana cam. Except for my pin collection. I took photos of that when Mike brought my Nikon home safe and sound. It felt weird not to have my [...]

Free hugs and others

February 15, 2010

Here are a few more faces from downtown today. These are in addition to the Slovak Men’s Hockey Team – just in case you missed them. First of all, in two different spots there were 3 “Free Hugs” guys. I didn’t hug any of them. I know. I was snobbing off the free hugs guys.

The peaceful protest

February 12, 2010

My favourite protest sign of the day spotted on Commercial Drive a few blocks away from the protest after the torch passed us this morning. It has been a fun day. It was fun to see the opening ceremonies after all the rumours that were swirling about them for the last few weeks. I have [...]

Olympic Torch – Take 2

February 12, 2010

Thankfully The Torch Relay is longer than 1 day, so I had a chance to get some more shots today to make up for yesterday’s “soft focus” shots. Today we headed down to Commercial Drive. There were rumours/tweets/pretty good information that there would be a protest not far from where Mike works. We did see [...]

My favourite torch observers

February 12, 2010

I got this photo of a fellow countryperson and her dog patiently waiting for The Torch to arrive down Commercial Drive. So far, this is my favourite shot of the entire event. I don’t know who this woman is or the name of her dog because I took this photo across the street with my [...]

I found the Blue Cheburashka

February 8, 2010

Every where you turn, there’s something going on downtown. Why just today after work, I saw this a mere block away from my office out front of The Bay. There were piles of people taking this fuzzy blue animal’s photo. And who was the person in the cool red tracksuit? The design on the back [...]
