Daydreaming about snowshoeing

The last few days have been dark and rainy. It looked like the sun was setting today at 2:15 – it’s been that dark. Maybe that’s what it feels like to live in a place close to the North Pole where they experience 20 hours of darkness a day. I found myself thinking about the shiny white brightness of my snowshoeing adventure last week. I need to go back up there again soon. Looks like there’s lots of snow up there these days.

I’m happy not be driving downtown right now. Mike’s got the next couple of days off, so I get a break from my Shaw Shuttle Service job. A couple of Mike’s co-workers live near us, and since we understand the indignities of taking public transit, we drop them off on the way home. One of the guys jokingly asked me if I’d still come pick him up even if Mike wasn’t working. Heh.

NO.

Mike and I spent the evening in and watched 3 episodes of the HBO Documentary about The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. I was sorta interested, but frankly, kinda bored with the whole Ovechkin and Crosby adversary thing and I wasn’t really sure why I even asked Mike to PVR it for us. I wasn’t expecting much, but was definitely curious.

Within 15 minutes, I was fully engrossed and could not stop watching. Maybe I’m nosy, but I really love seeing day-to-day footage of really skilled people. I warmed up to all the players – especially the Penguins’ goalie, Fleury. I KNOW! No one is more surprised than me. The Capital’s coach is a bit tough to take, but whatever. Even Ovechkin had a friendly side to him – maybe it was that footage of him eating his mom’s cabbage rolls with his family? And the house where he was eating his dinner? Nothing like the gold house with the miniature giraffe commercial at all! Gah! Why are you making these guys so likable, documentary film makers?

Spoiler alert: Crosby TOTALLY SWEARS! He dropped the f-bomb! I always thought of him as a quiet/soft spoken soldier-type. Nope. Potty mouth. Actually, they were all pretty sweary – just like Slap Shot.

If you get a chance to watch the documentary, I highly recommend it. I think the camera people had full access, the cinematography and editing was great, and if you don’t know how the shoot-out works, they explain it in great detail. I know. I thought that was pretty straight forward, but they spent about 10 minutes near the second last episode on a Shoot-Out 101 explanation. Turns out I knew it all already.

I also enjoyed Evgeni Malkin’s English – I’m not making fun. I’d be in BIG trouble if I ever had to speak Russian to anyone, let alone to anyone in Russia. But when LoveJoy got hit in the head with a puck, Malkin consoled him by saying, “Girls love!” and patted him on the shoulder while pointing to his stitches on his face. Unfortunately Lovejoy’s head swelled up like the Elephant Man. OUCH. I hope he’s okay! See what this show did to me? They are real people! With kids! And they celebrate Christmas! And they play video games.

I have to say one thing, though, Pittsburgh seems like the team having the most fun. I’m sorry, Capitals, but that was my conclusion after the first 3 parts. Mike’s PVRing the last part. We’ll watch it on the weekend.

Canada’s Northern House

Today’s excursion started out at the Canadian Mint Pavilion right across the street from my office. I headed out on my lunch hour to see all the monies only to be turned away at the door by a very civil security guard who informed us all that “We’re not open until Friday.” He was kind enough not to point out the big sign that said the same thing out front that I had just walked right past. It may also surprise you to know I was not the only one who missed the sign. So, I put the money display on my schedule for next week and headed up around the corner to 602 Hastings Street to visit Canada’s Northern House. It’s the pavilion showcasing art and culture from the coldest part of our country – The Northern part of the White North. Now that’s cold.

The art displayed included paintings, beaded works, leather work, crafts and sculptures by people from Nunavut and Northwest Territories.

Boxing Kangaroo

Today I had a big dilemma. Should I go to the Canadian Pavilion on Hastings Street to see how Canada mines it’s diamonds OR do I go to the Olympic Athlete’s Village to see if I could get a shot of the Boxing Kangaroo flag? Last night on the news we heard that Team Australia had put up a huge Boxing Kangaroo flag instead of the country’s official flag and the International Olympic Committee had asked them to take it down. I HAD to get down there to see if they had complied. Had they?

No way! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Hellz no! The flag was still proudly displayed – two stories tall of punchy kangaroo at 1:30 this afternoon. Here’s a zoomy shot below:
